Kanye West - Postmodernism

Kanye West is an american rap/hip-hop artist who has won numerous musical awards. He is one of the most postmodern artists of the current generation as he samples a range of music to different effects from all kinds of genres.

For examples his song 'N*ggas in paris' he samples two songs 'Victory by Puff Daddy' and 'Lady Humps from Blades of Glory', as well as this he also samples a recording of a Reverend baptising someone, this shows how he uses a range of sources to create beats and lyrics for his music.

The samples he uses range in size in his songs, for example in his song 'Father stretch my hands pt. 1' he samples 'Drake - Jumpman' for one line at the beginning of the song, however in his song 'gold digger'  Kanye West samples 'Ray Charles - I got a women' for the hook to his song'.  This is an example of Kanye West using others music respectfully and also of his use of bricolage.

Kanye West - 'Stronger' (graduation album) samples Daft Punk - 'Harder better faster'

Kanye West - 'Touch the sky' (graduation album) samples Curtis Mayfield 'move on up'

Kanye is also an artist who is very much concerned with his image, everything he does on twitter, in his songs and when being recorded is done in a way that promotes him as a deep thinking, insightful and creative person. Such is as seen with the cryptic tweets he so often makes.

For his song 'runaway' on 'My beautiful dark twisted fantasy', Kanye made a 32 minute music video/short film, that samples lost of his own music throughout, this is postmodern as it breaks traditional conventions, for the duration of the 32 minute video there is no use of the male gaze.

Kanye West makes an effort to detach himself from one genre, instead he often creates his music in a multilayered sonic collage of a mixture of genres.
